ATHLETICS CLUB PART 2 ( 1914 – 1936 )

The above photo shows the tug of war team having a break from building the spectator stands before the annual sports event at Dorchester.   Each year the team was taken off duties prior to the event, so they could practise and build up their muscles putting the grounds stands together. No mean feat in those days when you see all the benching involved. It does not have a date on but I think it is from 1914. The names on this photograph are not recorded but based on other photos I believe they are:

Back row   1:   PC William FREAK ?    2:   William Jacko COWLING      3:  Samuel LOVELL      4:     ?

Front row:     1:  Reg KENT    2:    Tom HARVEY        3:    Arthur SWATRIDGE                         4:  Walter  BLEATHMAN        5:    Samuel LOVELL .

Sylvia COLLINS has also a copy of this photograph and it is pretty obvious her great grandfather Percy BECK took it.    See Sylvia’s blog.

On Wednesday 8th July 1914 at Dorchester, another successful meeting took place, in beautiful weather with a large attendance.

The general arrangements were on the usual scale this being the 19th annual sports day. The proceedings were carried out with excellent organisation and punctuality throughout, which reflected great credit on the General Committee headed by Chief Constable GRANVILLE and his Deputy Mr PLUMMER. Drill Sgt WHITE was in charge as the efficient Secretary with PC BROWN as his assistant and the Honourable Treasurer Supt E SPRACKLING.

The ground was laid out with its broad frontage of grand stands bordering the grass track, and its series of canvas pavilions, which was an impressive site.

The Chief Constable of Southampton had again given his Force band leave so they could play from the bandstand during the event and also for the dancing in the evening.

The various contested events were interspersed as usual with some entertaining variety turns, the artistes including ALMERO, who, on an ariel Norwegian spar, gave a sensational performance called  “The Midshipman Aloft”. There was also RODIN the knockabout cyclist, a man of funny falls, HERALDO, a clever wire walker and equilibrist and LEVARDO, an eccentric juggler who, with the co-operation of a troupe of acrobats, gave an amazing performance.

After the luncheon of presentations, speeches and toasts the sports began.

The main event was the tug of war and the Dorset team was:

Team left to right in the next photo card.

SWAIN,    CLARKE,    BLEATHMAN,    MATTHEWS,   COWLING,    LOVELL,    TOLLEY,  and   HARVEY

The prizes were: 1st:  10 clocks valued at 30 shillings each and for the runners up 10 hearth rugs valued at 15 shillings each.

In the first round A Company Royal Garrison Artillery from Weymouth beat HMS Temeraire 2-0.  Newtown Liberal Club beat HMS Southampton 2-0. Royal Marine Artillery from Portsmouth beat Somerset County Constabulary 2-0 and the 5 other teams drew a bye.

In the second round Bristol City Police beat 28th Company RGA 2-0 AND Dorset County Constabulary beat the 30th Company RGA (B Team) 2-0.   The 30th Company RGA (A Team) beat Newtown Liberal Club after a long and exciting contest 2-0. Royal Marine Artillery beat the Eastleigh Ramblers 2-0. In the semi final Bristol City Police beat the RGA and Dorset County Constabulary beat the Royal Marine Artillery, who were the Army and Navy Champions.

In the final Dorset County Constabulary beat Bristol City Police by 2-0.

Preliminary rounds were decided on 26th June and in the Final Portland , under captain Supt E SPRACKLING took on Wareham under their captain Supt H TOOP. After a sturdy pull Wareham came out on top.

PC Percy COPP is again the star of the sports meeting, he is shown here with the white T shirt, number 31.   The cyclist I have not identified yet, it only took me 4 years to identify Percy !

1923

On Wednesday 25th July the 23rd event of the Athletics Club again took place at the  Recreation ground on Weymouth Avenue.  On this occasion the attendance was well down but  the threatening meteorological outlook for rain was no doubt the reason. However the rain held off and as usual the crowd witnessed an excellent programme of sporting events.  This year would be the first year that races were held for daughters, under 14 of the Counties policemen.

Here is a scan of the programme.  Half of the programme is advertising so just the events and rules are below.

A brief interlude from all the facts, especially for anyone who likes to see a good advertisement of “the time”.

1924

COUNTY ATHLETICS ASSOCIATION meeting on Wed 13th February.

At Wynglade Hotel in Poole a meeting was held to consider forming an Athletics Association for the county. The Mayor of Wareham Mr FV SYMES presided and those present included representatives of various athletic organisations and other sportsmen from across Dorset.  Mr Charles OTWAY of the Amateur Athletics Association, having outlined the general organisation of such a body, it was agreed, on the proposition of Supt W WHITE of Sherborne Police, representing the Dorset Constabulary Athletics club. A large committee was appointed under new president, The Earl of Shaftesbury and a public meeting would be held later at Dorchester.

In July,  the preliminary events took place for the Police Athletics competition and were decided. This took place on the previous Friday afternoon and evening.

In the Divisional Tug of War contest.  Weymouth beat Sherborne, Dorchester beat Poole and Weymouth then beat Wimborne, so the Final will be between Weymouth and Dorchester again.

   In the air rifle competition, Divisional results were:   1st Sherborne, 576 points, 2nd Weymouth, 553; 3 HQ, 532; 4 Wimborne, 486; 5 Dorchester, 457; 6 Blandford 450; 7 Poole “A” 424; 8 Wareham, 396; and 9 Poole “B” 369.

Each member of Sherborne team won an electro plated jam jar and spoon.

Individually the best shot was PC HALLETT  165 (Sherborne) who won a sportsman’s knife. PC HEGGS (Poole) came 2nd with 157 points and received a silver mounted cup.

The four man skittles competition was won by the Dorchester Division.

The main competition took place on Wed 30th July.

President and Chairman:           C/C  Lionel      PEEL-YATES

Vice Chairman:                            DCC  Alfred      BARRETT

Secretary:                                     Sgt   Sidney      BAIGENT

Assistant Secretary:                    PC    Alec          FOSTER

Treasurer:                                     Insp Bertram   SPRACKLING

As usual a large crowd attended and filled the three large stands and hundreds of spectators lined the course. The programme contained many events of special interest both in the club and open events which proved the club’s popularity was being maintained. There were many prizes kindly donated which drew cyclists and runners from distant places as Bristol, Bath, Portsmouth, Bournemouth and Farnborough.  The new CC Major LW PEEL-YATES took over as Chairman backed as usual by Mr A BARRETT his vice-chairman.   There was a luncheon prior to the start when all the dignitaries, including the Mayors of Dorchester and Weymouth and the Deputy CC OF Somerset Mr E YOUNG who all toasted “The King”.  Supt AP BECK (Bridport) then spoke and welcomed all the visitors on behalf of the club, coupled with the hope they would have an enjoyable event. The Mayor of Weymouth and Mr Young then spoke and Deputy CC A BARRETT, said it was his duty, and he felt it a great honour, to propose “The health of the CC Major YATES as they were heartily glad to see him and he was sure that the previous CC Capt GRANVILLE was in mind with them and they could not have had a better CC. He was happy that Major PEEL-YATES was a worthy gentleman to take over who would no doubt interest himself in the sports just like Capt GRANVILLE.  Major PEEL-YATES responded by saying it was a great to be appointed as the new CC  and to receive great help in a difficult position. He always thought from other that an Irishman could not receive a hearty welcome but now he disagreed after the welcome he had received at Dorchester and he hoped he could fill his predecessors footsteps. Much applause was received to all that spoke.

Last to speak was Supt W WHITE (Poole), who said every year it was the aim and ambition of their committee to put on the best programme possible for the benefit of the public who paid to see them. In his opinion the best men in the county were those who took part in the athletics, and, as one who took part in the “great game” over the water, he found that the best men were undoubtably those who could do a 100 yards in under 11 seconds, to which there was much laughter and applause.

Divisional Tug of War.

All Divisions had competed the week before and the holders Weymouth.

Final:  Weymouth V Dorchester.   Weymouth with the heavier team won with comparative ease and they had a combination of Weymouth Borough original strong team and some of Dorset Counties best.

Weymouth’s team were: Sgt’s COWLING and BURROUGHS, Constables GODCHILD, HYDE, YOUNG, MARSH, VARDY and HANSFORD under Insp CHERRETT.

Open Tug-of War.

Teams that entered were: Weston super-Mare Division, Taunton Division, Dorset County police, Dorchester Division, Weymouth Division, Bournemouth Tramways, and Dorset Royal Tank Corps.

Dorchester Division beat Weymouth Division after three pulls but still did not get to the final.

The Dorset County tug of war team was now stronger due to the officers gained from the Weymouth amalgamation. Insp CHERRETT was now the coach and in the final Dorset County beat Weston Super Mare, two pulls to one. The team comprised of: Sgt COWLING, PC’s BURROUGH, GOODCHILD, HYDE and YOUNG ( all from Weymouth) and PC WHITE (Dorchester), PC TOLLEY (Wimborne) and PC HARVEY(Poole)

Best all-round Athlete   PC CD TAYLOR (Poole) who was presented the silver plated rose bowl.

On the 19th July at Somerset Police sports.

Weymouth Division represented Dorset in the open Tug-of war being watched by CC and Mrs PEEL YATES. Weymouth came third after losing their Sem-final to Weston-super-Mare, who in turn lost in the final to Bristol.

Also on the bus was PC A BAILEY, who came 3rd in the 440 Yards flat, handicap.

On the 9th Aug, because of their teams success, Dorset Constabulary send a team to Stamford Bridge on Saturday 9th August, when they met with defeat in the Final of the London City Police sports Tug-of war competition. Entry fee was 10 shillings per team and the Dorset’s for coming runner up received 15 shillings each. Dorset sent the following team under Insp CHERRETT who captained the team: Sgts COWLING  and BURROUGHS (Weymouth) and Sgt   HARVEY (Poole). Constables WHITE ( Evershot),  TOLLEY (Wimborne) and  GOODCHILD,   HYDE and YOUNG (all of Weymouth).

In the semi-finals they saw off Walworth and in the Final they pulled against the Met Police “B” Division. It was hardly fair though as it was within 15 minutes of their last opponents and the Met had already won 15 trophies in 1924.   All the Dorset men won Attache cases to take home.

In 1925 the annual sports event took place on Wednesday 17th June.

Prior to the sports events the usual luncheon was served in a large marquee.   The CC toasted “The King” . DCC BARRETT then proposed the health of the CC as he had been with the Force for over a year, and the more they knew him, the better they liked him, which received a round of applause. In him they had a gentleman who associated himself with the Force , whether in the way of duty or sport. The CC responded that he hoped the Athletics club would be still going in 100 Year’s time, although he would not be CC then. He then went on to mention, that this was the first year that the Met Police “B” Division would be taking part in the competition.    Supt William MILLER of Weymouth responded to other dignitaries by saying Supt Percy BECK and he were the only two original members from when the club was formed in 1896. He took the opportunity to thanking the general public and the local dignitaries for their support over those years for the Club.

This year’s meeting took place on 22nd June and preliminary events took place on Friday  17th. In the Divisional Tug of war five teams entered , Sherborne, Weymouth and Bridport failed to win through , so Dorchester will meet Poole in the final.

At the start of the meeting the officials and guests all gathered for a luncheon, where speeches were made.   The CC presiding over his 4th meeting said that during the past year, the Dorset Constabulary had passed through a historic period. He referred to the detachment of men sent to Glamorganshire during the coal strike, when some hard times were experienced, and mentioned the decoration (MBE), which had been bestowed on Supt LOVELL of Sherborne, who was that day at Buckingham Palace to receive the order from the King. Personally he knew Supt LOVELL would be the first one to say that the honour was not conferred on him, but on the detachment that he commanded and on the Dorset Police Force as a whole.

The recent stormy weather changed on the day to brilliant sunshine and because of this, it was expected that a large sum of money would be distributed amongst the hospitals in the county, as a substantial portion of the proceeds are annually devoted to this deserving cause.
