The below photograph is from the “Bobbies on the Beat” book and shows some of the main winners from the annual athletics event which took place at Dorchester on Wednesday 24th June.
President and Chairman: C/C Lionel PEEL-YATES
Vice Chairman: DCC Alfred BARRETT
Secretary: Sgt George GRAY
Assistant Secretary: Sgt Henry MARTYN
Treasurer: Sgt Arthur KNIGHT
Another ideal weather day for fast times and the usual sports and 300 pounds worth of prizes to be given out. This attracted a large field of entries, mainly from the South, but some cyclists came from London.
Major PEEL YATES during his speech said that, “ The event now being supported so well by the Dorset people, they had managed to give 350 pounds to 12 hospitals in the County and another 270 pounds had gone to their own benevolent fund. When it was realised that if a Constable died his widow was only entitled to 30 pounds a year and 10 pounds for each child the need for such a fund was evident. We are now ceasing to be the police force we used to be and are becoming one of the fighting forces of the Country. If it should ever happen that another war should break out, we shall find the police one of the first lines of defence. Unless we have a hard, fit force, well trained in athletics, we shall not be able to cope with this emergency, and it is for that reason that I shall support games and athletics to the utmost.”
Welcomes were then made to the DSJC and Superintendents from Reigate, Somerset, Swindon and Monmouth.
High light of the day was perhaps watching W HARVELL of Southampton in the open, one mile cycling championship. He had represented England in the last Olympics at Los Angeles. He was rather heavily handicapped but still thrilled the crowds. Locally of course the Tug of War was what brought most of the spectators in and they were not disappointed with Dorchester winning the 13 stone contest.

On Saturday 4th July 1936 the National Police Championships, were held at the Horsfall playing fields, Bradford in West Yorkshire.
A bus was hired and Supt Sam LOVELL took the small Dorset team, stopping off at Doncaster on route on the Friday night.
There were 21 Championship events and Dorset entered 5 events.
The Tug of war team took part in the 104 stone event, beat Monmouth 2-1 who were the welsh champions and then Glasgow 2-1 the Scottish champions but lost to the RUC 2-0 in the final. Dorset team were: LOVELL, CHASE, TREVETT, CONWAY, BROADWAY, HITCHMAN, OLIVER and BARNES under coach Sgt SCREEN. Silver medals and badges were awarded.
Dorset were defeated in the catch weight competition by the eventual winners, the Royal Ulster Constabulary.
To put this in perspective, the RUC won 8 events and the Met Police 6 and the remaining 7 went to various Forces.
PC HINDLEY competed in the 100 yards and PC HINDLEY and PC HANN were in the 440 yards but did not win any medals. PC H BLUES was 3rd in the two mile walk.
The Western Gazzette reported on the above and said the Constabulary team should be “commended on their good show against the pick of Britain’s police athletes.
1937
The annual event took place on Wednesday 30th June with over 160 competitors with a programme of 52 open and club events.
During the speeches Mayor MARSDEN recounted, when she had been in the hands of the law in Dorchester when she was twelve. She was hauled before the magistrates and given a caution for riding her pedal cycle dangerously on the pavements of the town.

Rose Bowl best athlete winner was PC A G BAILEY of Poole, with 18 points which was a surprise as he had over 20 years service.
Equal second on 14 points were PC’s HINDLEY and HANN of Dorchester.
On Saturday 25th July 1938 the Dortset team competed at the annual Bristol Constabulary athletics meeting
Dorset won the tug of war and the relay beating Wiltshire in both finals.
Does not say whom the teams were but likely to be against all the local Forces.
The above photo taken at Dorchester is, I believe taken in 1938 or possibly 1937 and shows the Athletics Club with all their trophies.
Some of the trophies, obviously have been in events other than Athletics ( eg the football and cricket bat), as over time, depending on the season there were also very competitive annual football and cricket leagues within the Constabulary Divisions.

The annual sports event was being resumed after a 6 year break and owing to the amount of support always received from Poole it was decided to hold the fixture instead of Dorchester. By permission of the directors the meeting was held at the Bournemouth Gas and Water Company’s sports ground in Alder Road, Branksome on Saturday 10th August. Prizes were to be awarded to the value of £300, not including challenge cups.
This year’s events fully maintained the Club’s reputation for first class organisation and punctual timing of events. Among those which created the greatest interest were the Tug-of war contests particularly the No 7 Police District Championship where Dorchester and Poole teams met in the final. They were fairly evenly matched, but Dorchester had the advantage of a slight incline and won the first of 3 pulls. The open 1,000 metres N.C.U cycle event was also an outstanding event.
PC T HABGOOD of Poole was judged to be the best all rounder athlete of the day and received a 21- piece tea service.
All the prizes were presented by Mrs L.W PEEL YATES, wife of the chief Constable and Chairman Major L. W. PEEL YATES.
An enjoyable programme of music was provided throughout the afternoon by the Bournemouth Gas company Military Band under conductorship of Mr T. W, HARDY.

The above photograph was one of many sent to me by Alan MATHEWS , grandson of Fredy MALKIN. Fred was obviously the tug-o-war coach for a few years and this was taken at Bovington Camp.
I cannot see or identify many but position 4 looks like WEST.
More research needed on the somerset sports even at the end of July, which says its the first national event in Somerset. Teams from Dorchester and Poole took part and individuals, H L HANN, H MOORE and E RUSHEN.
In September 1946 the Constabulary sent a team to Gloucester to compete in the No: 7 Police District Championship Sports.
In the relay race Dorset “A” team won , the team was Ray RUSSELL, Ernie RUSHEN, Harry MOORE and Les HANN. Runners up were Dorset “B” comprising of Alfred BARRETT ( Jnr), Roland OLIVER, Tommy HABGOOD and George DUNFORD. In the half mile individual race, PC’s HABGOOD and BARRETT were second and third respectively.

Described as the leading Dorset athletics event of the season, this year’s sports day again took place on Weymouth Avenue on 26th June. Entries came from all over the South-West and further afield. Between six to seven thousand spectators formed a great circle around the ground. The Club has a basic objective of encouraging athletics in the County Constabulary, but for many years the meeting has attracted open competitors in various flat and cycle events and so became a major factor in the development of sport in Dorset.
Two major County Amateur Athletic Association Championships took place, the open events were, the 100 YARD FLAT and the HALF MILE FLAT, which did not involve any local police officers. In the final of the TUG-OF-WAR 13 stone event, H DIV MET POLICE again beat PETERSFIELD POLICE.
The band of the Royal Tank Regiment played and there was a brilliant display given by the B & M Motor Cycle Club, from Bovington Camp. The Gymnastic display this year was from the Russell Cotes Nautical School at Parkstone.
